Did you Know Chiropractic Care Can Help your Colicky Baby?

Any parent who has had a baby that suffers from colic will tell you how heartbreaking it is to see their child in pain and be unable to soothe them. While colic affects an estimated 20-25% of infants, experts aren’t entirely sure of the root cause. However, many parents have found relief for their child through chiropractic adjustments for colic symptoms.

What are the Signs of a Colicky Baby?

Colic typically shows up when a baby is 2 or 3 weeks old. Babies normally cry when they’re wet, hungry, frightened, or tired, but a colicky baby cries excessively, often at the same time of day. If your baby is colicky, you may notice that their cries at this time are louder and higher pitched than their normal crying and that the episodes start and end suddenly.

Your colicky baby may also show signs of a gas. Gas doesn’t cause colic, but they might be extra gassy because a colicky baby will often swallow air when they cry. You may notice that your colicky baby clenches their fingers, arches their back, becomes flushed, and alternately extends or pulls up their legs and passes gas as they cry. They may sometimes feel better after passing gas or having a bowel movement.

Chiropractic Treatment for a Colicky Baby

During a clinical trial, published in the October 1999 issue of Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, researchers found that “Spinal manipulation is effective in relieving colic in infants.”  In this study researchers put babies with colic in two groups.  They gave one group an anti-gas medication and the other group received chiropractic adjustments from a pediatric chiropractor. The babies in the medication group showed a 38% decrease in the amount of crying their moms recorded, but the babies that received chiropractic adjustments showed a 67% decrease in crying.

While large scale research results are lacking and colic is considered a condition that resolves on its own with the passage of time, there are many case studies showing improvement in a colicky baby with subluxations.

It should also be noted that chiropractic isn’t a treatment for colic. If a subluxation is present, interfering with the proper function of any part of the body, restoring proper nervous system control often allows the body to heal. This may happen regardless of age and regardless of what the particular symptoms are called.
