DOT Physicals for Class C Drivers Licenses

If you or someone you know must complete a physical exam to apply for or maintain a Class C driver’s license (CDL), we have good news. ChiroCenter offers federally-mandated physical exams at all five of our metro locations.

Who Takes the DOT Physical?

The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires the following drivers to hold a CDL and undergo a physical exam in compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Specifically, those who:

  • Drive a vehicle of 26,000 + pounds or combined with towed vehicle in excess of 10,000 pounds
  • Transport interstate cargo
  • Drive a bus seating 15 or more passengers.

Anyone applying for or renewing a CDL must pass the DOT physical exam. The exam is designed to ensure that applicants and license-holders are physically capable of safe driving now and in the near future. Typically, CDL drivers repeat the exam every 24 months or sooner, if indicated.

What Does the Minnesota DOT Physical Require?

  • 20/40 20/40 vision in each eye as well as in both eyes combined, with or without vision correction.
  • Distinguish colors found on traffic signals.
  • Be able to hear a forced whisper from at least 5 feet away.
  • An applicant may have diabetes which is controlled through diet or oral medication. Diabetes requiring control with insulin injections is not permitted.
  • Blood sugar level must not exceed 200 mg/dL.
  • No use of a Schedule 1 drug, defined as habit-forming with no recognized medicinal use. These include amphetamines, narcotics and marijuana–despite the fact that marijuana is legal and used for medicinal purposes in some states.
  • Those with a cardiovascular disease such as congestive heart failure must present stress test results and a physician’s note allowing the applicant to drive a commercial motor vehicle with no restrictions.
